I Puked on my girlfriend at Valley Fair and she still Married me!

May 16, 2012 by admin

Love has ups and downs and good days and bad day, but in the end love is truly a choice.  Here is a funny story from when we were dating!  After reading it you might be surprised that we ended up married!   About a month before we were engaged, my girlfriend and I went to an amusement park in Shakopee, MN called Valley Fair, and what a trip it was.

I started out from Chippewa Falls, WI and and picked her up in Menomonie. We headed to Wal-Mart to pick up a few groceries, including some Strawberries, and some breakfast Subway sandwiches, which we munched on, during the drive to the twin cities.

When we arrived, we checked in and headed for our first ride, the Monster. It’s a medium intensity ride with 6 arms, each holding 4 cars. The entire structure spins, and each individual car spins.  As it turns out, Kara and I just happened to step into the car that is posessed by demons, or so it seemed, and we whipped around like crazy.  The first half of the ride was fun, and then it hit me. My stomach just went…garble grumble. I clinched my eyes shut for the rest of the ride, trying not to throw up, and I made it through the ride. As the ride spun down, I started to feel it come, and the reflex suddenly came. I was holding it in. The guy in the next spinning ride said, “no puking!” I said, “Yea, I’ll try!”  The ride attendant let me out first, I think he saw that I was about ready to blow.  I started spitting as I walked down the exit, and I made it just out of the ride area and I threw up once. I felt OK. It wasn’t too bad, I got it out of my system, just one blow, and I was done. Kara bought me a  Mt. Dew, then I slowly walked around with her for about 15 minutes, until I thought I was OK. We then decided to try the next ride.

We walked up the entrance to our first roller coaster: High Roller.  After that day, they might rename the ride high embarrassment.  It’s an older ride supported by a white wooden track, and it just simply went up and down.  We finished the soda, climbed on and went up the first hill. We zoomed down the first hill, up and down the second, and the third, and then I lost it. I started throwing up, again and again and again. Everyone on the ride behind me noticed immediately and started going, Oh, OOOh, OOOHH, aghh.., eeew, OH. I had an orange flowage all down the left side of my shirt and down my arm. It reached a ridge on the coaster car on my left, and it started flowing. We went up a hill, and it flowed down the car, we went down again and it flooded forward. They chanted in awe and disgust as I ralphed all over myself for at least a minute. When we rolled into the station, the crown of maybe 200 onlookers joined the car in the ooo’s and aaa’s. Perhaps my most embarrassing public moment ever. As I walked down the exit I could hear a guy on the loud speaker say something to the effect of “Ok everyone, get off the coaster, it will be down for 10 minutes for ….uh….’maintenance.’

I headed to the bathroom to wash off my shirt, then we got our hands stamped to get back in and then to the car just to relax and re-cooperate. I washed up as best as I could with the alcohol hand sanitizer and just relaxed for a while, until my shirt could dry. Unfortunately the shirt was pretty much ruined and it smelled terrible. After a time I walked back into the park, only to find that when I tried to get in, I had accidentally washed off my re-entry stamp with the alcohol hand sanitizer. I explained the situation to the attendant, and offered for her to smell my shirt to believe me. She reluctantly let me back in, but I had to put my shirt back on. I reluctantly put it back on briefly long enough to dash into the gift shop to buy a new t-shirt.

After getting a new shirt, we took it really slow. Kara and I went to the I-max theater, then on a series of very tame water rides. At least if I lost my cookies again, it would wash right off, right? I ended up being all right, going on Raging Rapids, Hydro Blaster, and the Flume. After that We decided to try a roller coaster, Wild Thing. All in all I was a bit queasy but I was done puking for the day.

One of the best things about this churning day was Kara was with me every step of the way. From buying me something to drink several times, to waiting in the car with me, and taking it easy on the slower rides, she was amazing. She never pushed me to go on a ride I didn’t want to, and she was always there to support me. We ended our ride with a magical kiss on a fast moving coaster.

After a few more rides, going on Steel Venom, and then Kara went on the Extreme swings and sharing a funnel cake and some home-made French Fries, we headed home sitting side by side, still in love with one another.  Oh how my wife wishes we had this moment on video!

50 years together

50 Years Together

Today I was thinking back to the day my husband proposed to me. We were visiting his family about four hours my fiance house and about four and a half hours from where I was living at the time. We were there to celebrate my fiance grandparents 50 wedding anniversary and a wedding for some friends. We got up that morning and he was so clumsy, which was very unusual for him. We went to lunch with his brother and his brother fiance. As we left the restaurant to head to the wedding, Chris announced that he forgot his tie. I remember being irritated because the tie was not really that important and I made my opinion clear. His brother however chimed in a said he also forgot his tie. Unknown to me that was his code for “I’ve gotta go get the ring.” We arrived at the wedding just as the grandparents were being seated.

During the beautiful church ceremony Chris asked me if I could see us standing up there in the near future. I responded with a quick, “That thought freaks me out!” Poor guy, he totally freaked out! After the ceremony we headed to the church where the party for his grandparents was to be held. Near the end of the meal, Chris got up to share a few words about his grandparents and their 50years of love. During the speech he started to talk about our relationship. I remember feeling very on the spot. All of a sudden he walked over to me pulled out a ring, in front of his entire family! The rest of what happened was a blur and for a minuet I forgot that I was suppose to say yes! It’s a good thing that the clip was caught on video or I wouldn’t remember a thing.

Looking back I think that it would have been super fun to have the clip in HD video with one of our amazing stable HMC40 cameras. We did have a videographer for our Wedding Day! I would not trade the footage for the world!

Divvying Up the Date Budget

July 28, 2011 by Helienna

A couple years ago, my groom came up with a brilliant idea for handling our date budget. We were always running out of money before the month was out of Fridays, and our date on the last Friday of the month was often a pathetic affair. I still compliment my groom on what a great idea he had to solve this problem.

Groom’s idea was to take our $100 monthly date budget and divide it between the two of us:

Me = $50

Groom = $50

Besides this, though, our personal $50 is divided into two categories:

1) cheap date ($20)

2) expensive date ($30)

A $30 date may not sound “expensive,” but it works for us. For the four Fridays in an average month, I get one cheap date and one expensive date, and he gets one cheap date and one expensive date. A cheap date may be Chipotle and a Redbox. An expensive date may be Green Mill and a trip to the local cheap theater.

This strategy may not sound profound, but we can both attest to the fact that it is so much easier to stay within our overall $100 date budget if we think of one date as cheap and the other as expensive. At the end of the month, we sometimes find ourselves with date budget money left over!

“Making the Movies Jealous”: Great Proposal Story

May 23, 2011 by Helienna

Last week, Chris sent me a link to a story on examiner.com. When Matthew Still of Locust Grove, Georgia, wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Ginny, he concocted an elaborate plan involving his brother, a videographer, Ginny’s father, and a local movie theater. You can read the story here. Examiner.com bills this video as “soon-to-be-viral.” Enjoy!

Eau Claire Wedding Videography: Corey and Suzy

May 19, 2011 by Helienna

Corey and Suzy were married on April 9th, 2011 at the Florian Gardens in Eau Claire, WI, with a reception also at the Florian Gardens.

Freedom has filmed several weddings at the Florian Gardens, and we are happy to recommend it as a convenient, elegant venue. They are a “one-stop” location with facilities for both the ceremony and reception, on-site caterer, and a wedding coordinator on staff. They feature three different gardens, each with a different theme and plant selection, which are ideal for outdoor weddings. My groom (who occasionally films weddings for Freedom) has been very impressed when working with the owners of the Florian Gardens. Their website is here.

In School? Try a Study Date!

May 11, 2011 by Helienna

If one or both of you is in college or graduate school, it can be hard to find free time to spend together. My groom is in seminary and is currently in full research-and-paper-writing mode. I went through graduate school before he did, so I have empathy! When schoolwork would normally prevent us from spending an evening together, sometimes we go on a study date. We start by going out to eat someplace cheap, usually where we can both get dinner for under $10 total. (Coupons are frequently involved here.) Then we head on over to the seminary library. My husband gathers books, does research, writes papers, etc., and I goof off on my computer–by writing blog posts, for instance. (This is not the first blog post I’ve written at “our” study table.) Groom accomplishes more than he would at home thanks to the quiet, low-distraction atmosphere, and I can also check a few computer-based actions off my to-do list.

Thinking of going on a study date with your special scholar? Here are a few ideas to help you have a successful one:

1. Pick a location you both enjoy and where you can both accomplish something worthwhile. Your definition of “worthwhile” will vary, of course, but you don’t want to go home feeling like the evening was a waste of time. The seminary library works for us because it has all the resources my husband needs and because I love both libraries and academia. Spending an evening surrounded by books and scholars is no hardship for me!

2. Be aware of the hours of operation for your chosen location. We were disappointed one Wednesday night to find that the seminary library closed at something like 7:00 pm on Wednesdays, which did not leave us enough time for the “study” part of our plan. We now plan our study dates for Tuesday or Thursday nights, when the library is open until 10:30.

3. Make sure you bring power cords, earbuds, or whatever else you’ll need for what you want to accomplish. (Nothing very profound here.)

My husband and I both enjoy study dates. Even if we can’t interact with each other as much as we’d like to, we can still spend time in each other’s presence and exchange mushy glances. Happy studying!
