Divvying Up the Date Budget

July 28th, 2011 by Helienna

A couple years ago, my groom came up with a brilliant idea for handling our date budget. We were always running out of money before the month was out of Fridays, and our date on the last Friday of the month was often a pathetic affair. I still compliment my groom on what a great idea he had to solve this problem.

Groom’s idea was to take our $100 monthly date budget and divide it between the two of us:

Me = $50

Groom = $50

Besides this, though, our personal $50 is divided into two categories:

1) cheap date ($20)

2) expensive date ($30)

A $30 date may not sound “expensive,” but it works for us. For the four Fridays in an average month, I get one cheap date and one expensive date, and he gets one cheap date and one expensive date. A cheap date may be Chipotle and a Redbox. An expensive date may be Green Mill and a trip to the local cheap theater.

This strategy may not sound profound, but we can both attest to the fact that it is so much easier to stay within our overall $100 date budget if we think of one date as cheap and the other as expensive. At the end of the month, we sometimes find ourselves with date budget money left over!

“Making the Movies Jealous”: Great Proposal Story

May 23rd, 2011 by Helienna

Last week, Chris sent me a link to a story on examiner.com. When Matthew Still of Locust Grove, Georgia, wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Ginny, he concocted an elaborate plan involving his brother, a videographer, Ginny’s father, and a local movie theater. You can read the story here. Examiner.com bills this video as “soon-to-be-viral.” Enjoy!

Eau Claire Wedding Videography: Corey and Suzy

May 19th, 2011 by Helienna

Corey and Suzy were married on April 9th, 2011 at the Florian Gardens in Eau Claire, WI, with a reception also at the Florian Gardens.

Freedom has filmed several weddings at the Florian Gardens, and we are happy to recommend it as a convenient, elegant venue. They are a “one-stop” location with facilities for both the ceremony and reception, on-site caterer, and a wedding coordinator on staff. They feature three different gardens, each with a different theme and plant selection, which are ideal for outdoor weddings. My groom (who occasionally films weddings for Freedom) has been very impressed when working with the owners of the Florian Gardens. Their website is here.

In School? Try a Study Date!

May 11th, 2011 by Helienna

If one or both of you is in college or graduate school, it can be hard to find free time to spend together. My groom is in seminary and is currently in full research-and-paper-writing mode. I went through graduate school before he did, so I have empathy! When schoolwork would normally prevent us from spending an evening together, sometimes we go on a study date. We start by going out to eat someplace cheap, usually where we can both get dinner for under $10 total. (Coupons are frequently involved here.) Then we head on over to the seminary library. My husband gathers books, does research, writes papers, etc., and I goof off on my computer–by writing blog posts, for instance. (This is not the first blog post I’ve written at “our” study table.) Groom accomplishes more than he would at home thanks to the quiet, low-distraction atmosphere, and I can also check a few computer-based actions off my to-do list.

Thinking of going on a study date with your special scholar? Here are a few ideas to help you have a successful one:

1. Pick a location you both enjoy and where you can both accomplish something worthwhile. Your definition of “worthwhile” will vary, of course, but you don’t want to go home feeling like the evening was a waste of time. The seminary library works for us because it has all the resources my husband needs and because I love both libraries and academia. Spending an evening surrounded by books and scholars is no hardship for me!

2. Be aware of the hours of operation for your chosen location. We were disappointed one Wednesday night to find that the seminary library closed at something like 7:00 pm on Wednesdays, which did not leave us enough time for the “study” part of our plan. We now plan our study dates for Tuesday or Thursday nights, when the library is open until 10:30.

3. Make sure you bring power cords, earbuds, or whatever else you’ll need for what you want to accomplish. (Nothing very profound here.)

My husband and I both enjoy study dates. Even if we can’t interact with each other as much as we’d like to, we can still spend time in each other’s presence and exchange mushy glances. Happy studying!

Wedding Dance + the Royals?

April 20th, 2011 by Helienna

The most famous wedding planning currently in progress that of England’s Price William and Catherine Middleton. I don’t really glom on to famous weddings much, but you can find the official website for their wedding here. What did catch my attention (enough to make a blog post on it, anyway) is T-Mobile’s spoof ad which features royal look-alikes in a tribute to the trend of surprise wedding dances. I like how the actors seem to reflect the personality of the royal they are playing, if loosely. Admittedly, I don’t know much about England’s royal family, but this ad’s “Queen Elizabeth” is reserved but amiable, not really dancing, and certainly not doing the Macarena down the aisle.

As a continuation of the theme of last week’s post, here is the video:

I know everyone and their brother have seen this clip (64 million views on YouTube!?), but no self-respecting wedding blog can neglect the most famous processional ever! (Note: this was not filmed by Freedom.)

Planning a Wedding while Planning for Deployment

April 9th, 2011 by Helienna

A few days ago, I heard a brief story on Minnesota Public Radio about Brian Wunderlich and Margarita Jacobson, a Minnesota couple who had planned to get married in June. Brian is in the Minnesota National Guard and could be deployed to Kuwait shortly. In light of Brian’s possible deployment, he and Margarita made a last-minute decision to marry on April 2nd–in less than a week! Their wedding, attended by a small group of family and friends, was in Kasson, Minnesota. You can link to the story, including more photos, here.

It is definitely a challenge to face a separation from your new spouse soon after the wedding, but, as the original story pointed out, it is more feasible to be married than not when a partner is overseas. Marriage “offers insurance and a monthly combat allowance for the family left behind.”

I like how this story proves one of my mantras: if you end up married at the end of the day, the wedding was a success! Even a less-than-ideal situation can still work out beautifully.
