Wedding Dance + the Royals?

April 20, 2011 by Helienna

The most famous wedding planning currently in progress that of England’s Price William and Catherine Middleton. I don’t really glom on to famous weddings much, but you can find the official website for their wedding here. What did catch my attention (enough to make a blog post on it, anyway) is T-Mobile’s spoof ad which features royal look-alikes in a tribute to the trend of surprise wedding dances. I like how the actors seem to reflect the personality of the royal they are playing, if loosely. Admittedly, I don’t know much about England’s royal family, but this ad’s “Queen Elizabeth” is reserved but amiable, not really dancing, and certainly not doing the Macarena down the aisle.

As a continuation of the theme of last week’s post, here is the video:

I know everyone and their brother have seen this clip (64 million views on YouTube!?), but no self-respecting wedding blog can neglect the most famous processional ever! (Note: this was not filmed by Freedom.)

Planning a Wedding while Planning for Deployment

April 9, 2011 by Helienna

A few days ago, I heard a brief story on Minnesota Public Radio about Brian Wunderlich and Margarita Jacobson, a Minnesota couple who had planned to get married in June. Brian is in the Minnesota National Guard and could be deployed to Kuwait shortly. In light of Brian’s possible deployment, he and Margarita made a last-minute decision to marry on April 2nd–in less than a week! Their wedding, attended by a small group of family and friends, was in Kasson, Minnesota. You can link to the story, including more photos, here.

It is definitely a challenge to face a separation from your new spouse soon after the wedding, but, as the original story pointed out, it is more feasible to be married than not when a partner is overseas. Marriage “offers insurance and a monthly combat allowance for the family left behind.”

I like how this story proves one of my mantras: if you end up married at the end of the day, the wedding was a success! Even a less-than-ideal situation can still work out beautifully.

Money-Saving Tip: Sam’s Club Sells Flowers?

March 21, 2011 by Helienna

One thing I quickly noticed when planning my wedding was that a couple can spend as much money as they want. There is almost literally no limit to how much money a wedding can cost. As I was looking around for ways to save money in some areas, I came across Sam’s Club’s website and learned that they sell flowers in bulk! I also saw that their flowers were less expensive than those offered by other online floral vendors and much more affordable than hiring a florist.

My Sam's Club Bouquet

I got married in 2008, and at that time, Sam Club’s selection was quite limited; roses were pretty much all they sold. For my wedding, I chose only one type of flower, white roses (my favorite!). I could order in one quantity only: 125 stems, which equals 125 roses. Sam’s Club’s selection has expanded immensely since then; you can now buy lilies, orchids, daisies, and many other types of flowers. In 2008, I had to buy some baby’s breath (filler for corsages) and salal (aka lemon leaf, to add greenery) from another vendor, but Sam’s Club now sells many kinds of filler and greenery as well. They even offer a “do it yourself” pack that includes one color of roses, ribbon, greenery, and other supplies. Another item of note is a selection of fair-trade flowers.

When ordering, you can select the day of delivery. I chose to have my flowers delivered two days before the wedding. They arrived in the morning, which was perfect. The flowers were packed in five boxes of 25 flowers each. My parents and I opened up the boxes and put the flowers in two huge industrial-size buckets with water. They gradually opened over the next two days. 125 flowers proved to be more than enough. We were able to make my bouquet, bouquets for five bridesmaids, and corsages for my groom, five groomsmen, our parents and grandparents, two ushers, the pastor, and musicians as well as plenty of decorations!

If you’re thinking of going the Sam’s Club route, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1. You (or someone who trusts you) need to have a Sam’s Club membership to purchase flowers.

2. Even if you get the diy pack, you need to put everything together yourself or find someone with floral experience to assemble things for you. Besides the bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets, you may also want flowers for corsages, decorations for the church/ceremony location, and decorations for the reception hall. Keep in mind how elaborate and formal you want your decorations to be.

I was very happy that I decided to buy my flowers from Sam’s Club, and I hope this tip is helpful!

Wedding Stress Reduction: The Delights of Delegating

March 7, 2011 by Helienna

One key way to reduce stress when planning your wedding is to delegate tasks to others. Maybe a relative or friend with good taste can design the table decorations for the reception, or your musicians can select their own music for the prelude to the ceremony. If you don’t have to do everything yourself, don’t! I’ll outline a few things to keep in mind when deciding what to delegate and to whom.

1. Choose someone whose taste you can trust. If one groomsman’s idea of accessorizing is wearing a lampshade, he might not be the best person to make sure all the men have their corsages.

2. Delegate to those who can work independently. Someone who is in a constant state of crisis may end up causing more stress by making sure you, the people getting married, are okay with everything. It helps if some of the “delegates” have been involved in a wedding before.

3. Delegate things you really don’t care that much about. (Aside from getting the license, it really is okay to have some lower-level priorities! You’ll still end up married!) If the exact appearance and flavor of the cake are really important to you, that might be something you want to take care of yourself. For my wedding, I wasn’t too worked up about cake, so I asked my mom to choose the baker, and she did. All I had to do was meet with the baker briefly to taste the cake and discuss colors and quantity. Thanks, Mom!

4. With these ideas in mind, don’t be afraid to remind people that you’ve delegated a task to them for a reason—you don’t want to do it, and you’re confident that they’ll do a great job. Sometimes people who harass the bride (it’s usually the bride, somehow) with questions don’t realize how stressful planning a wedding can be for the gal in question; they really want to please you.

Happy delegating!

Stevens Point Wedding Videography: Darrin and Katie

Here’s a “trailer” of a wedding we did several months ago, back when things were green outside. *sigh* I’m still keeping my hot beverages within arm’s reach, but spring is right around the corner here in the Twin Cities!

Darrin and Katie were married on September 18th, 2010, at Standing Rocks County Park in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. In this clip, you can see the clarity our HD cameras impart to the picture quality.

Introducing a New Blogger for Freedom Videography

February 24, 2011 by Helienna

Hello everyone, my name is Helienna, and I am Chris and Kara’s sister-in-law. I have been interested in getting involved in the family business, and promoting our affordable wedding videography packages and we agreed that one of the best ways I could do that was by adding to the Freedom Videography blog. Our goal is for me to contribute regularly to the blog, so hopefully you’ll see more frequent updates here.

So, how do I have credibility to blog for Freedom? For starters, I have experience planning my own wedding and all the activity (dare I say, drama) involved with making a wedding classy. Having stayed married to my groom for well over two years now, I think I can say it’s been a success! In fact, our wedding was the first Freedom Videography filmed…before it was Freedom at all. If you go to our wedding video samples page, you’ll see our names at the very bottom of the list. Filming our wedding was what got Chris and Kara interested in venturing into professional videography in the first place.

That’s a brief overview of why I’m here. I’m looking forward to  adding some helpful and (hopefully) interesting posts in the future. If you have any material you’d like me to cover, let me know in the comments!

If your getting married in Wisconsin or Minnesota and you are considering a wedding videographer, then contact Freedom Videography today and see if we’re available for your wedding day.
